***Secondary art courses will involve some writing.

$10 studio fee to cover all art materials including a sketchbook. (due by Friday, Sept. 1st)
**If Sketchbook is lost, it is the student’s responsibility to replace it and make up for missing work. Handouts should be placed in your sketchbook or kept in a separate folder (not provided) & left in your cubby for easy reference.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:.
Grading Scale:
The art department uses the grading scale determined for grades 9-12 by the school board. Grades will be updated online within 2-3 weeks of completing studio projects. Assignments may be given based on the following.
In-Class Work:
Studio project grades will be based on criteria set for the lesson as well as craftsmanship and effort*. Rubrics will be used for grading whenever practical.
All Studio Project Grades are Based on the Following Criteria-
Partial work will NOT be graded and will receive a 60%. It is at the instructor’s discretion to determine if a piece is complete or not (based on examples shown in class, discussions, critiques, & objectives for each project.
***Students should keep all work including sketchbook drawings unless instructed otherwise.
Absences, Tardy's, & Leaving the Room
Late Work
The deadline date=the last day to turn in a project for full credit. After the deadline date, 5 pts will be deducted from the total score each day the assignment is late up to two weeks. After that, the student will receive a zero in the gradebook. If the deadline date is the last day of the quarter, assignments may not be made up.
Cheating:
This will result in a zero on the assignment/test/quiz, parent contact, and an office referral.
Guidelines for Acceptable Artwork:
The art dept. has specific guidelines for acceptable artwork. Any work promoting, supporting, or favorably depicting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexism, racism, bigotry, hatred towards others, or deemed obscene, vulgar, or offensive to the instructor, students, or any specific group of persons, will not be accepted for credit and may result in disciplinary action. In the case that one of these occurs, the student(s) will receive a zero for the assignment.
Homework:
Although students will not be given homework on a regular schedule, there may be occasional prep work for projects that require time spent outside of the class period. In addition, any work not completed by the due date will need to be completed as homework by the deadline date outside of regular class time. Students are welcome to come in during my prep, or before/after school to work on projects. Please plan with me ahead of time.
*Effort:
Students are expected to give 100% every day. The effort portion of each grade will be based on the student’s willingness to try new techniques and challenge him/herself as well as participate in class discussions and critiques. Although grades are not based on the student's behavior, noncompliance, and a negative attitude tend to directly correlate with a lack of effort and low-quality work.
Clean Up Procedures
Clean-up tasks are the responsibility of everyone that works in the art room. Cooperative clean-up is essential to the maintenance of the classroom and classroom supplies. Cleanup jobs will be assigned per table and it is the table's responsibility to complete the job & place supplies back to their proper location. You will be required to clean up after your own messes and the messes of others.
Classroom Expectations
More than any other class my expectations will be extremely high for wood art. We will be using materials that could result in serious injury. Horseplay and the inappropriate use of tools will NOT be tolerated and may result in loss of privileges or removal from class.
Consequences
1st offense - Redirection of the unwanted behavior and a warning, hall conference
2nd offense - Parent contact, sentences, alternative assignment, Seat reassignment, Hallway
3rd offense - Office referral
***Severe interruption: you will be sent to the office immediately.
Positive Rewards: help pass out supplies, help make copies, run errands, help with demos, treats, and positive parent contact.
The bottom line, negative behaviors will result in immediate referral and discipline as determined by administrators and the handbook.
Cell Phone Policy
Phones are allowed during studio time and when given permission.
Do’s: listening to music at an appropriate volume, taking photos of artwork, looking up image resources for project ideas
Don’t: have phones out during instruction/demos, text, make calls/answer calls, use social media, play games, watch movies/shows/game film, create playlists, and have the volume up high enough that the class can hear it.
If you are not present in class working on your assignment you will lose privileges.
***One earbud must be out at all times or music should be low enough that you can still hear instructions and participate in class discussions. I should NEVER be able to hear your device.
If you need to call/text your parents/guardians please ask permission beforehand and don’t make it a habit.
1st offense- Warning to put the phone away
2nd offense- Cell phone will be taken for the rest of class
3rd offense- Phone given to the office, referral in Teacher Ease
Food and Drink Policy
Due to the nature of the supplies we use in the art room, there will be times when it is unsafe to consume food. Please have any food eaten before the tardy bell & all trash promptly thrown away. Water bottles with secure lids will be allowed on tables. Open containers must be kept on the counter next to the sink. Drinks left in the room after the bell rings or stored on any open shelving with projects/supplies will be thrown away without warning.
The instructor reserves the right to make necessary changes to the curriculum throughout the year due to time constraints, student cooperation, and student ability level, among other variables. All policies as stated in the handbook will be in effect. Please review the entire handbook.
